Over the last 30 years there has been a resurgence in Calvinism. What started as the “Young, Restless, and Reformed” movement has now become “middle-aged, settled, and Reformed(ish).” Sadly, as we began to rediscover the “Doctrines of Grace,” we failed to demonstrate that grace with others. Since we were always playing defense against those who (vehemently) disagree, we learned to put our fists up. Reformed guys became characterized as “Theo Bros” who are arrogant and condescending. Of course, that didn’t help our case at all. We became proud… boastful…impatient…puffed up… as we went through our “Cage Stage.” Guilty.
Humble Calvinism by JA Medders is such a helpful corrective. As we begin to understand how radical grace truly is we should become all the more gracious in our relationships with others, especially with those who are trying to understand difficult doctrines. His premise makes so much sense, but for too many of us, doctrine takes a while to move from our head to our heart.
This book is a great encouragement to season our speech with love and gentleness and patience.
