Unlike so many others, I didn’t grow up with dispensationalism. Though my covenantalism was underdeveloped, I was always taught an eclectic, amillennial interpretation of Revelation. Therefore, I’ve had to learn the dispensational system in order to understand and interact with it.
In After Dispensationalism, Irwin walks readers through the dispensational hermeneutic while critiquing it as he goes. This is a good resource if you’ve always been taught dispensationalism and you’re beginning to consider alternatives. It is a critique, but it’s gracious.
One of the most intriguing parts for me was Irwin’s argument that the Revelation is written as a chiasm. The structure that Irwin provides is interesting if not convincing. It’s definitely something that I plan to spend a little more time with, especially before I decide to preach through Revelation.
