Romans 1:16: For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
This week I had the opportunity to “do the work of an evangelist” (cf. 2 Tim 4:5) and share the Gospel. What a joy! Think about it, the God of the universe, the God who saves, the God who redeems has called us, his people, to share the good news of Jesus with a lost and dying world. We get to bring living water to thirsty souls, the bread of heaven to those who are starving, and the life-giving message of Christ to the hopeless and spiritually bankrupt. We are given the front row seats to witness the power of God in salvation!
We should never be timid or afraid to speak the Gospel into the lives of our unbelieving family and friends. Paul tells us that it is powerful, it is the message that brings eternal life to everyone who believes. This is the Word that saves! We have no power in and of ourselves – the power isn’t in our ability to put together a stirring Gospel presentation – the power isn’t in our skill or tactics – the power isn’t in our earnestness or zeal – and the power certainly isn’t isn’t in emotionally manipulative appeals. No, the power is in the Word of God as the Spirit of God moves upon hearts. We are to preach the Gospel and then let the Lord work!
In one sense the Gospel is so simple. Jesus died to atone for the sins of everyone who believes. By trusting in his finished work, we have the forgiveness of sins and eternal life. But the Gospel is also profoundly deep. Redemption, reconciliation, adoption, justification, imputation, etc. all flow from the person and work of Jesus Christ. It’s so simple a child can understand it, yet it is so profound that theologians spend their lives studying it. No other message is like the Gospel.
So, Beloved, don’t be afraid! Share the Gospel with joy! Tell people about the person and work of King Jesus. Watch as the Holy Spirit changes lives and brings to life the spiritually dead. I was reminded this week that sharing the Word of Christ isn’t an obligation – it’s a joy and delight to the soul.
