Sinner Saint: A Surprising Primer to the Christian Life is one my favorite books that have come out this year. It’s doctrinally rich, yet very accessible to the average reader, which is a hard balance to get right.

Kjolhaug essentially breaks down the “Law / Gospel Distinction” and illustrates the significance for the Christian. This is a point of emphasis in my own ministry because I believe that it is foundational for how we approach the doctrine of sanctification. We are simul justus et peccatorAt the same time, sinner and saint. The flesh wars against the Spirit and the Spirit against the flesh (cf. Gal 5:17). This means that struggle will always be a part of the Christian life. Therefore, we don’t approach sanctification with triumphalism, but rather like Paul in Romans chapter 7.

Sinner Saint is a wonderful resource for the church. I absolutely recommend it for clergy and laity alike.
