Sinner Saint: A Surprising Primer to the Christian Life is one my favorite books that have come out this year. It’s doctrinally rich, yet very accessible to the average reader, which is a hard balance to get right.
Kjolhaug essentially breaks down the “Law / Gospel Distinction” and illustrates the significance for the Christian. This is a point of emphasis in my own ministry because I believe that it is foundational for how we approach the doctrine of sanctification. We are simul justus et peccator – At the same time, sinner and saint. The flesh wars against the Spirit and the Spirit against the flesh (cf. Gal 5:17). This means that struggle will always be a part of the Christian life. Therefore, we don’t approach sanctification with triumphalism, but rather like Paul in Romans chapter 7.
Sinner Saint is a wonderful resource for the church. I absolutely recommend it for clergy and laity alike.
